Why It’s Time to Choose Health Supplements Wisely, Not Blindly

In today’s health-conscious society, dietary supplements have become almost a must-have item for many. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, interest in boosting immunity has surged, and with that, the sales of supplements like vitamins, zinc, and probiotics have skyrocketed. Products targeting joint health, bone strength, and even memory support for older adults continue to grow in popularity. The personalized health market is also expanding at a rapid pace.

But here’s the real question: Are we taking these health supplements the right way?

Rising Use of Health Supplements – And Growing Side Effects

According to a 10-year analysis by the Korea Consumer Agency, 34.3% of people who took health supplements reported side effects such as abdominal pain and skin rashes. That means the very products meant to improve health can actually harm it if not used correctly.

Even more concerning is that nearly 20% of consumer complaints were about unclear product ingredients or how to take the supplements. This shows the issue is not only about product quality but also about the lack of proper consumer awareness and access to reliable information.

Are Overseas Health Supplements Really Safe?

Many people are drawn to foreign supplements, especially through online shopping. But tests by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and the Korea Consumer Agency on 19 imported brain support supplements revealed disturbing results.

Every product tested contained banned ingredients or prescription-only drug compounds. Some included neuroactive substances like galantamine, vinpocetine, and citicoline — which can cause vomiting or shock if taken incorrectly. Others had risky compounds like noopept, bacopa, or huperzine, known to trigger digestive issues or headaches.

This highlights the serious risks of using unverified foreign supplements. Just because it’s popular online doesn’t mean it’s safe.

Consumer Awareness Must Improve

Even the best supplements can become harmful if not taken properly. A recent survey of 2,000 adults living in major cities revealed that 36% never read the product label before taking a supplement, and 53.8% didn’t check for the official certification mark.

This kind of behavior not only causes confusion between regular food and health supplements, but also makes it difficult for people to judge if a product is truly functional and safe.

Health Supplements vs. Functional Foods – Know the Difference

Many consumers don’t know the difference between health supplements and so-called “functional labeled foods.” But legally, these are not the same.

  • Health Functional Foods (Health Supplements): These products are backed by scientific research and certified by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. Labels must clearly state the health function, dosage, and directions, and carry an official mark.

  • Functional Labeled Foods: These are regular foods that simply mention functional ingredients. They are not certified as health supplements. Their packaging must clearly say, “This is not a health functional food.”

Failing to recognize the difference may lead to disappointment in results — or worse, health problems.

How to Choose Health Supplements the Smart Way

The health supplement market will only continue to grow. But smart choices must grow with it. To avoid harming your health while trying to improve it, keep these basic rules in mind:

  1. Look for the Certification Mark: Make sure the product is officially recognized as a health supplement.

  2. Read the Label Carefully: Always check the function, how to take it, how much to take, and the expiration date.

  3. Avoid Unknown Sources: Be cautious with imported products that may contain unsafe or unapproved ingredients.

  4. Consider Your Health Condition: Some ingredients may react badly with medications or health issues.

  5. Consult a Professional: Always talk to a doctor or licensed nutritionist before starting any supplement.

Understand Before You Choose

It’s not enough to take supplements just because everyone else is doing it. Understanding what your body needs and how to meet those needs safely is far more important.

Smart supplement choices begin with knowledge. And those choices don’t just protect your health — they also help protect the health of your loved ones.

Governments and health organizations must also step up with better education and clear information, so consumers can make safer, smarter decisions.

Now is the time for real change — and it starts with how we think about health supplements.
